Abstract

This research is a literary study on a movie entitled Orphan. The objectives of the study are to identify whether Esther is a psychopath based on the HarePsychopathy Checklist and identify the self-defense mechanism that she does tohide the psychopath condition. This research focuses on Esther's psychopathbehavior which was analyzed using the Hare Psychopathy Checklist theory. Inaddition, the writer discussed the self-defense mechanisms analyzed using
psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud. Since the writer used a movie as the object of the study, the study was done qualitatively. The writer conducted an analysis process by watching the movie several times and noted the important
things of information from the movie. The result of the analysis indicated that there are at least 12 items that proved her to be a psychopath, and two types of self�defense mechanisms that she employed to hide her psychopathy. In addition,Orphan is able to spark the audience's interest because it presents a story that is quite unique and not found in other movies depicting psychopathy.Keywords: psychopathy, psychoanalysis theory, self-defense mechanism, Hare Psychopath Checklist (PCL), mise-en-scène
