Abstract

This thesis examines Will Traynor, the main male character in the movie Me Before
You (2016) directed by Thea Sharrock. The aim of this examination is to answer the
curiosity about Traynor’s decision to commit suicide. The writer determined that
the most effective way to answer the question is by identifying and explaining Will
Traynor’s values in life. The writer used psychoanalysis concept of death instinct
as proposed by Sigmund Freud. Also, the writer uses the qualitative descriptive to
find the characterization of Will Traynor and Will Traynor value in life. The writer
discovered that Will Traynor holds fast to the importance of living life to the fullest.
Besides, he loves Louisa Clark but does not want to be a burden to her. Therefore,
the death instinct, which according to Freud can be found in most people, seems to
make him choose death than being a burden. In other words, death instinct is a
strong answer for the reason of Will Traynor’s decision to die.
