Abstract

1922 movie is an American horror drama Movie directed by Zak Hilditch, andbased on Stephen King’s 2010 Novel of the same name. The movie tells the storyof James Wilfred, a simple yet proud farmer, who conspires to murder his wife
named Arlette by convincing his teenage son, Henry, to assist. The objective ofthis study is to identify 1) the fundamental motive of Wilfred James’ wife murder,
2) his manifestations of guilt, and 3) his reason of feeling of guilt. The researcheranalyzes the data by employing the psychoanalytical perspective, focusing on theid, ego, and superego by Sigmund Freud (1923). This study uses qualitativemethodology with an interpretative analysis in a descriptive way. The result ofthis study shows that through his superego and id, Wilfred James murders his wife
accordingly to maintain his family relationship, that leads him to possess the land.He experiences a guilt as manifested in many forms, i.e., fault, accusation, blame, plea, being aversive, transgression, reparation, reconciliation, contrition, remorse, repentance, apology, and feeling terrible, anxiety, and shame. All the guiltmanifestations can be seen through his ego in his action, thought, or any objects inthe movie and after murdering Arlette (and lost her son, Henry), Wilfred James’guilt can be seen through his superego and id maintaining his family andpossessing the land. He thinks that he does something morally wrong by
murdering Arlette, which makes him suffer. Keywords: Freudian psychoanalysis, guilt, id, ego, superego
