Abstract

This study used Dickinson series season one which aired in 2019 as the primary source for an analysis of traditional gender roles and patriarchal issues. This study analyzed traditional gender roles concepts experienced by Emily Dickinson in the series and how her experience with traditional ender roles concepts depictspatriarchal issues in the series as well. Dickinson series is an American comedydrama television that Alena Smith created in 2019. This series has three seasons in total in which each season contains ten episodes. Each episode lasts between 26 and
34 minutes. The objective of this study is to analyze Emily Dickinson’s traditional gender roles in the series and the patriarchal depiction caused by her experience with those concepts of traditional gender roles. In conducting this study, the writer applied Descriptive Qualitative Method since the writer only focused on finding evidence of traditional gender roles concepts experienced by Emily Dickinson and how her experience with traditional gender roles concepts depict patriarchy in the series. In analyzing the findings, the writer employed the traditional gender roles theory proposed by Duvaux in 2022 and the patriarchy theory proposed by Walby in 1990. In gathering the data, the writer noted down all the traditional gender roles
concepts experienced by Emily Dickinson in the series. The concepts of traditional gender roles experienced by Emily Dickinson that are found in the series are the burden of domestic work on women, stereotyping of gender roles, and limited access to the public sphere for women. These traditional gender roles depict the patriarchal issue in the series as well. The burden of domestic work on women
depicts the patriarchal issue because women are seen as secondary figures to men, stereotyping of gender roles depicts the patriarchal issue because men and women
are seen differently so they receive different treatment, also limited access to the public sphere for women depicts the patriarchal issue because men and women have
different access to do and to be whatever they want in the public sphere. Lastly, the writer expects that this study can be used as a reference for future researchers and
as supplementary material for teaching. Keywords: Dickinson series, traditional gender roles, patriarchy
