Abstract
This research is a reader-response criticism study on a webtoon entitled The Secret of Angel. The objectives of the study are to identify the prominent elements of romance; and how the elements of romance found by readers. This study focuses on elements of romance in The Secret of Angel reflected in plot; characters; and readers-responses toward the webtoon, which was analyzed using the theory of
Elements of Romance and Reader-response Criticism. Since the researcher uses a webtoon and its audience, the study is named as reader-response in a qualitative study. The researcher conducted a reading process and interviews which led to the interpretation process. The result of the study indicated the dominant elements of romance are Formula and Fantasy elements; also the readers of the webtoon were
interested since characterization and conflict occurred in real life. In addition, The Secret of Angel was able to trigger readers’ interest since it presented an unpredictable story.Keywords: Reader-response criticism, Elements of romance, Readers’ interest, The Secret of Angel
