Abstract

Ernest Hemingway’s The Sea Change provides us with the theme of pride, acceptance, forgiveness, independence, sexuality and conflict. Since one of the most striking things about the story is that Hemingway appears to be exploring a subject that would have been taboo at the time the story was written which is bisexuality, so the researcher decided to discuss it further in this thesis. Bisexuality is an attraction to more than one gender. Those who identify as bisexual feel a sexual or romantic attraction to people of a different gender as well as their own. Realizing that nowadays, the issue of bisexuality, as a part of LGBT, has become a common thing in the society, particularly in Indonesia. But at the same time, not all Indonesians can accept things related to the issue so that there are many different responses (good and bad) from everyone. This study focuses on how the issue of bisexuality is represented in The Sea Change usesthe Theory of Representation in Literary Works. After that, the researcher continued with an explanation of the researcher’s attitude towards the issue of bisexuality, also how the discussion of bisexuality in the story affects the researcher’s attitude. This study aims to change the perspective and attitude of Indonesians
(who have been instilled with a ideology) towards the LGBT issue, to assess that not all people who are part of LGBT are completely bad. In the discussion, the researcher used Theory of Ideology and Deconstruction of Ideology to cover and elaborate the findings.Key words: bisexuality, theory of ideology, deconstruction of ideology and sexual attraction
