Abstract
This study explores the ethics of assisted suicide from the perspective of personal autonomy and societal values in Jojo Moyes’ Me Before You. The objectives of the study are: (1) to analyze the ethical arguments regarding assisted suicide through Will Traynor’s personal autonomy and societal values upheld by Louisa Clark, Will Traynor’s family, and other characters; and (2) to examine how the ethical perspectives of the characters reflect the ethical issues of dignity, personal freedom, and the value of life, including the influence of relationships, emotional conflicts, and social expectations on ethical decision-making. This research is conducted qualitatively, involving textual analysis to explore the ethical dimensions presented in Me Before You. The findings reveal the ethical tension between Will’s assertion of personal autonomy to preserve dignity and the opposing societal values emphasizing the sanctity of life. The characters’ diverse perspectives show the complexity of ethical decision-making.
