Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly present in our daily life, raising questions about how it might affect emotional growth and relationships, especially for younger generations. “Between Bytes and Bonds” is a creative thesis project in the form of a short story that explores this theme through the perspective of Lyto, a young boy growing up in a futuristic Southeast Asian city with an AI companion named Rhea. The story reflects on issues such as autonomy, emotional development, and the balance between technological assistance and human connection. Indonesian cultural elements are subtly woven into the narrative through scenes of family interaction, traditional games, and local food, aiming to feel authentic while remaining accessible to ESL readers. Through Lyto’s emotional journey, the story invites readers—particularly young adults and teenagers—to reflect on the value of making their own choices and the irreplaceable role of real human relationships in a world shaped by technology. Working on this story also taught me how to balance imagination with structure, and how to stay honest to a theme while remaining open to revision. With guidance from my supervisors, I learned to consider language accessibility for ESL readers and the importance of portraying AI from both positive and critical perspectives. Most importantly, I discovered that writing is not only about expressing ideas but also about listening— to feedback, to the audience, and to the heart of the story itself.
