Abstract
Parents are the first caregivers who have an important role in their children’s future. Psychological health is one of the things that need to be considered for prospective parents. Curiously, the movie Social Nightmare shows a single mother who struggles for psychological trauma. The author aimed to answer questions on the verbal expressions of the single mother’s psychological issues and how the mise-en-scène elements of the movie reflect the psychological condition of the single mother’s character in Social Nightmare. To answer that, the author conducted qualitative research that adopted psychological analysis based on Sigmund Freud’s theory and the author also applied the theory of mise-en-scène as the visual elements to analyze the psychological issues. As the results, the author discovered several verbal expressions, namely the unconscious psychological condition caused by trauma through language expressions. In addition, there are four elements of mise-en-scène applied in the climax scene of the movie, namely figure expression and movement, lighting, setting and costume. The author hopes that through this research, readers and other researchers will gain a better understanding of the new insights into the world of literature
