Abstract

By looking into the practices of the blended learning class, Pragmatic course of English Letters 2016, this study aims to investigate the quality of the performance of that course based on the point of view of Community of Inquiry framework, especially in the model of cognitive presence. Cognitive presence is one of the core elements in the theory of Community of Inquiry by Garrison et al (2000). This study
has found that the facilitator has succeded in promoting critical thinking during the teaching process, and it indicates the existence of cognitive presence. The point of
view of the students participating in that class has been extensively explored in order to obtain their opinion about how effective that the aforementioned online class has been run. This study is intended to offer best teaching practices for teacher concerned with online teaching. The Cognitive Presence Systematic Procedure by Garrison et al (2001) was employed to strenghten the findings. Based on the
interview with the students, 4 criteria of good online teaching have been identified :the online class must be able to create a triggering situation; the instructor must be
able to facilitate the learning process; be active in giving comment/feedback to the students, and the instructor must be able to use multi-modal as the learning tools to
deliver the material/topic of the study.Key Words: Blended learning, Community of Inquiry, Cognitive Presence, Critical
Thinking, Higher Order Thinking.
