Abstract
This paper reports the project of translating Absolute Brightness by James Lescene that the writer has conducted for her final undergraduate paper. The project was conducted in response to juvenile delinquency happening among dolescentsin Indonesia. By translating the novel, the writer hopes that it could raise awarenesshow family poses important role for adolescent’s development. In translating
Absolute Brightness, the writer used ‘targeteer’ approach so the readers of the targetlanguage could enjoy the novel like the source language readers. To achieve that,the writer used some methods such as thought-by-thought, linguistic amplification,and adaptation. In the translation process, the writer experienced some difficultiessuch as, translating dialogues from The Tempest, translating a joke, American legalterminology, unfamiliar words, and usage of capitalization. To overcome theproblems, the writer consulted with the thesis advisors, did research on the internet,and used a book as reference to produce a good translation.Keywords: translation, juvenile delinquency, family role, targeteer approach
