Abstract
This study analyzes the character transformation of Loki from a villain to an antihero as portrayed in four Marvel Cinematic Universe films: Thor (2011), The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013), and Thor: Ragnarok (2017). Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research explores the psychological and emotional factors that causing Loki’s evolving identity. Through the application of Jungian psychoanalysis and psychological theory, alongside characterization and mise-en-scène analysis, the study reveals how Loki’s internal conflicts, rooted in his identity crisis, desire for recognition, and personal loss, contribute to his complex character. The findings show that Loki’s transformation is not abrupt, but rather a gradual journey marked by significant narrative moments and emotional turning points, especially the death of his mother and his shifting relationship with Thor, that led to his character transformation. Visual elements such as setting, costume, lighting, and behavior further reinforce and show the development of Loki’s character, portraying him as a multidimensional figure who transitions from a manipulative antagonist to a morally ambiguous anti-hero. This research contributes to broader discussions of character development in film and literature, and highlights the psychological depth achievable within the superhero genre.
